An Exquisite Beast

dnsh:

I’ve always liked the idea of the exquisite corpse, whether it was drawing fragments of an overall picture in elementary school or trolling my college creative writing class’ version with New Pornographers lyrics. I really dig collaboration, and an exquisite corpse exercise is a fantastic experiment in it. I just love when the final product is unveiled because we all know we couldn’t have thought of something so nuts on our own.

Or can we?

An Exquisite Beast is one artist’s take on the exercise. Every day he draws something that must continue where the previous drawing stopped. The result is a crazy long (and counting) drawing that is pretty much one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. Click and prepare to get your horizontal scroll on.

It was a marvelous night, the sort of night one only experiences when one is young. The sky was so bright, and there were so many stars that, gazing upward, one could not help wondering how so many whimsical wicked people could live under such a sky.

The Old Astronomer to His Pupil

thisguyknowswhatimtalkingabout:

Reach me down my Tycho Brahe, I would know him when we meet,
When I share my later science, sitting humbly at his feet;
He may know the law of all things, yet be ignorant of how
We are working to completion, working on from then to now.

Pray remember that I leave you all my theory complete,
Lacking only certain data for your adding, as is meet,
And remember men will scorn it, ‘tis original and true,
And the obliquy of newness may fall bitterly on you.

But, my pupil, as my pupil you have learned the worth of scorn,
You have laughed with me at pity, we have joyed to be forlorn,
What for us are all distractions of men’s fellowship and wiles;
What for us the Goddess Pleasure with her meretricious smiles.

You may tell that German College that their honor comes too late,
But they must not waste repentance on the grizzly savant’s fate.
Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

What, my boy, you are not weeping? You should save your eyes for sight;
You will need them, mine observer, yet for many another night.
I leave none but you, my pupil, unto whom my plans are known.
You “have none but me,” you murmur, and I “leave you quite alone”?

Well then, kiss me, — since my mother left her blessing on my brow,
There has been a something wanting in my nature until now;
I can dimly comprehend it, — that I might have been more kind,
Might have cherished you more wisely, as the one I leave behind.

I “have never failed in kindness”? No, we lived too high for strife,
Calmest coldness was the error which has crept into our life;
But your spirit is untainted, I can dedicate you still
To the service of our science: you will further it? you will!

There are certain calculations I should like to make with you,
To be sure that your deductions will be logical and true;
And remember, “Patience, Patience,” is the watchword of a sage,
Not to-day nor yet to-morrow can complete a perfect age.

I have sown, like Tycho Brahe, that a greater man may reap;
But if none should do my reaping, ‘twill disturb me in my sleep
So be careful and be faithful, though, like me, you leave no name;
See, my boy, that nothing turn you to the mere pursuit of fame.

I must say Good-bye, my pupil, for I cannot longer speak;
Draw the curtain back for Venus, ere my vision grows too weak:
It is strange the pearly planet should look red as fiery Mars,
God will mercifully guide me on my way amongst the stars.

Truthful Tuesday: Unpopular Opinion Edition

I don’t like live music.

See, I don’t like crowds. I hate the fact that you can’t hear the same clarity and articulation in what the band is playing because most venues’ acoustics suck ass. I hate how much you pay to sit in a crappy seat or stand on the floor to have people smack into you all the time. I hate paying so much for drinks.

That said, there are a few bands I still want to see live. The Reverend Horton Heat is playing here next month and I really want to see them, again. I haven’t seen them since ‘94. I want to see Dream Theater. We’ve taken the kids to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra and that’s always a great show.

But generally, I hate seeing bands live.

I’m with you on that. Only live concert I’ve ever truly enjoyed was the last Flogging Molly show I went to. I realized that I’d rather be in the pit than standing on the sides.

Every other time, I’ve just been standing and cursing because there’s some 6’5” asshole standing in front of me.

Hey now, sometimes we can’t help where we stand and we have no choice but to block somebody’s view.

Yeah, you tall people!

See, the crowds thing is why I like outdoor shows. And also why I like jam band shows. They’re considerably more chill and the chance of getting an elbow to the temple or getting trampled is pretty much nil. I like energetic shows, but if I’m worrying about the mosh circle things, I won’t enjoy myself.

Dear "everyday" type of guy,

brain-food:

I dig you.

I enjoy the fact that you’re relatively grounded on a day-to-day basis. You don’t have these epically superior plans jotted down on your agenda and most of the time all you want to do is probably catch a quick game on EPSN or curl up on the couch to play LA Noire. Whatever your jam is…

We should be drinking margaritas in a foreign buena vista;

and falling asleep with you;
what else could I need?
